Renowned Thought Leader Douglas Laney Joins BARC

BARC is thrilled to announce the appointment of Douglas Laney as a BARC Fellow. A renowned data and analytics thought leader, advisor, author, and instructor, Laney is considered one of the leading experts on data strategy, analytics best practices, and the role of the Chief Data Officer (CDO). His experience and innovative ideas will elevate BARC’s thought leadership and research.

As a BARC Fellow, Laney will expand on his groundbreaking concept of “infonomics”–treating data as an actual enterprise asset and economic driver. This includes exploring data products and marketplaces; data, analytics, and AI use cases; applying true asset management, measurement, and monetization techniques to data; and data office operating models.

Laney’s experience spans AI startups and leadership roles in both consulting and research firms. During his long tenure at Gartner where he was a three-time recipient of its Annual Thought Leadership Award, Laney served as a VP & Distinguished Analyst helping form its CDO research and advisory practice.  He is the author of the bestselling book Infonomics, named the “must-read book of the year” by CIO Magazine, and Data Juice: 101 Real-World Stories of How Organizations Are Squeezing Value From Available Data Assets. He is regularly recognized as a thought leader, including being named one of the 100 most influential people in data and analytics by dataIQ, Thinkers360, Onalytica, and others. In addition, he is a visiting business school professor at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Illinois, co-chair of the annual MIT Chief Data Officer and Information Quality Symposium (CDOIQ), a contributing author at Forbes, and on the editorial board of CDO Magazine.

Carsten Bange BARC, CEO and Founder of BARC, was enthusiastic about Laney’s appointment: “Doug’s reputation and thought leadership on data and analytics strategy, and the value of data is unparalleled. His truly original and ongoing work on the economics of information and the use of data will undoubtedly help BARC’s clients manage their data more effectively and create new value streams from it. We are thrilled to have him join us as a BARC Fellow and work with all of us.”

Laney’s efforts at BARC will focus on understanding the wants and needs of the CDO/CDAO, the increasing role of data as a core business asset, innovating with information – especially in the area of AI, and the emerging trend of conceiving and introducing data products. Having advised dozens of data and IT executives around the world and taught executive education and business school courses for current and future data and analytics leaders, Laney will continue to unravel and expose trends, best practices, and creative ideas to help organisations thrive in the digital age.

Doug Laney shared his enthusiasm for the new role:

“As BARC continues to expand globally, I’m excited to join the top research and advisory firm for data, analytics and AI trends and solutions. I look forward to supporting and guiding our clients on their own journeys, whether they are developing and marketing innovative solutions, or looking to use data in new, high-value ways. My ultimate goal is to provide innovative ideas and practical strategic advice that enable organizations to optimize the value they derive from their data assets.”
