Provider and product description

CoPlanner was founded in 1989 in Graz, Austria. As a software vendor for corporate controlling, CoPlanner develops controlling software for medium-sized companies with a focus on planning, financial consolidation and reporting. CoPlanner currently employs about 40-50 people and claims to have 160 active customers, primarily in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

CoPlanner is a one-product company. Launched in 2003, CoPlanner is a flexible platform for building individual planning, financial consolidation and reporting applications and offers various specialist applications as well as prebuilt models that are parameterized for implementation. Data and metadata are stored in a Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft Azure SQL Database. The vendor also uses in-memory data storage on the CoPlanner server for multidimensional preparation of data, which is synchronized simultaneously with the relational database. Essentially, the product is a flexible platform for all kinds of planning approaches (top-down, bottom-up and combinations of both). Business power users typically use it to create wizard-based individual planning, budgeting and forecasting applications requiring only minimal IT support (e.g., for data integration tasks or data storage).

At the heart of the product is CoPlanner’s comprehensive corporate planning functionality. The platform provides flexible modeling of individual planning, budgeting and forecasting applications. Moreover, standard models are offered for, among other things, integrated financial planning (balance sheet, P&L, cash flow), financial consolidation, cost-performance accounting, HR planning and solutions for various sub-plans (e.g., sales planning, investment, production planning). In typical implementations, CoPlanner is used by 30 to 40 concurrent users. However, there are implementations with smaller and also much larger numbers of users.

CoPlanner customers usually start off with planning, budgeting and forecasting projects but often have additional finance and controlling requirements for reporting, analysis or financial consolidation. For standard formatted reporting, a business-user-friendly reporting module enables the creation of on-screen reports as well as formatted print reports. Comprehensive options are available for formatting tabular layouts as well as graphical reports. CoPlanner Analyzer and a feature-rich Excel add-in are available to support ad hoc query and individual analyses. Add-ins for Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word are also provided. CoPlanner data can be imported and consumed in Microsoft Power BI leveraging REST APIs.
The certified (IDW PS 880) CoPlanner Consolidation module completes the portfolio with functionality for legal and management consolidation.

  • Overall, CoPlanner has a rather slow speed of development compared to competitors. According to feedback in The Planning Survey, not many customers consider CoPlanner to be an innovative vendor. In the past, product development has been predominantly driven by the needs of existing customers. For this reason, technological and functional improvements and solutions have often focused on the business value and functionality of the product rather than the latest market trends.

Sehr hohe Flexibilität auch bei späteren Änderungen nach der Einführung.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

Die Eingabemasken im Browser könnte man noch optimieren. Zum Beispiel Formeln in der Zelle. In manchen Fällen ist die Reaktion des Programms etwas unglücklich. Zum Beispiel das Löschen der eingegebenen Zeile, wenn ein Schlüssel nicht beschreibbar war. Ggf. ist das aber auch noch eine Einstellungssache oder lässt sich programmiertechnisch abfangen.

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

Gegebenenfalls noch mehr Möglichkeiten einbauen, das Webfrontend individuell zu gestalten. Dazu gehört die Navigation, als auch die Buttons im Menü, die man mit zusätzlichen Funktionen hinterlegen könnte. Einführung einer Rechendimension, die Formeln auf den Elementen zulässt (vermutlich nur zur Lasten der Flexibilität umsetzbar, daher besser weglassen). Multiselekt bei der Filterdimension zulassen (oder ich habe die Funktion noch nicht gefunden).

How would you sum up your experience?

Erstklassige Beratung. Sehr hohe Flexibilität. Da wir technisch versierte Kollegen in der BI-Abteilung haben, können wir fast alles selbst anpassen und erweitern. Die Software hatten wir nach kurzer Einarbeitung gut im Griff.
