The BARC study "Lessons from the Leading Edge" reveals how much AI pioneers and laggards differ in the implementation of their projects.

What separates AI leaders from the rest? BARC’s latest study shows how they deliver results

Many organizations are experimenting with artificial intelligence, but AI leaders are already achieving measurable business outcomes. BARC’s new study, “Lessons from the Leading Edge“, uses global survey data to show what AI leaders do differently.

Maturity delivers better results

The research shows a clear performance difference between organizations. Among AI leaders with maturity in key areas, 53% have more than five AI projects in production. This is true for only 28% of other organizations. This gap shows the value of establishing effective AI leadership, governance, and operational frameworks.

Priorities shifted dramatically

The study also reveals that success metrics for AI projects have changed over time. Cost management becomes the second most important priority, while customer satisfaction is the top priority at 36%. A concerning finding is the low satisfaction with internal IT teams. 22% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their IT support for AI projects, the lowest rating among all partnership options evaluated.

The focus of responsible AI is changing

Another key finding relates to responsible AI. As priorities evolve, areas like privacy and compliance are gaining attention, while other foundational aspects of responsible AI appear to be neglected. This shift could introduce risks to the long-term sustainability and ethical basis of AI implementations.

The complete study offers practical guidance and strategic recommendations for enterprises that want to turn their AI goals into measurable business outcomes.
