BARC DeepDive Workshop

Define the right architecture for planning and consolidation before you choose software

How do you keep data quality and consistency intact across reporting, planning, and consolidation? How do you organize data in a way that is sustainable, scalable, and compliant? And how do you keep it under your control, so you can run the business on it, including AI use cases?

Start by clarifying which tasks SAP, data platforms, corporate performance management (CPM), BI, and analytics should own. The CPM Architecture Workshop turns those answers into a solid target architecture with clear requirements and defined next steps.

Our workshops are aimed at enduser companies. Final pricing depends on scope and customization.

Do you really need a data warehouse for planning and consolidation?

Or can the CPM system pull the data directly from SAP? Which tasks belong in the data platform, and which belong in planning and consolidation? And how do the results flow back?

These questions cannot be answered with a generic architecture model. The answer depends on your use cases, your existing system landscape, and your requirements for integration, data quality, security, and operations.

If these points remain open before a software or platform decision, finance and IT often define system roles and interfaces only once the project is already running. That increases coordination effort and makes it harder to compare proposals reliably.

The CPM Architecture Workshop gives finance and IT a shared basis for decisions. You can use it ahead of a software selection or as a standalone architecture engagement.

What do we clarify in the workshop?

Together, we develop a target architecture that reflects your requirements rather than the logic of a single product or architecture trend.

  • Which use cases in planning, reporting, and consolidation does the architecture need to support?
  • Which system owns what: ERP, the CPM system, a data warehouse or data lakehouse, BI, and analytics?
  • How do these systems store, process, and transfer data?
  • Which guardrails apply to data quality, security, access, openness, and operations?
  • How do your cloud strategy, data sovereignty requirements, regulatory requirements, and existing standards fit the target architecture?
  • What foundation do machine learning and AI need in a finance context?
  • Which data platforms are worth considering if you need an additional platform?

If a data platform is an option, we compile a long list at the strategy and portfolio level. A detailed product evaluation or software selection follows separately if needed.

What you take away from the workshop

After the workshop, you know which architecture fits your situation and which decisions come next.

Depending on the agreed scope, you receive:

  • an architecture blueprint with system roles and key data flows
  • architecture principles agreed between finance and IT
  • a requirements list for the software, platform, and implementation decisions that follow
  • prioritized next steps and the decisions that are still open
  • a long list of relevant data platforms, if needed

This way, you assess software and platforms against requirements you have defined together, instead of retrofitting the architecture to a product you have already chosen, or purchasing software that does not fit that architecture.

What’s included?

  • We review your existing documentation and prepare the workshop
  • We run a joint workshop with finance and IT
  • We assess the architecture options that fit your situation
  • We develop your architecture blueprint
  • We document requirements and architecture principles
  • We prioritize the next decisions
  • We walk you through the results in a closing session

Why BARC?

BARC combines corporate performance management experience with market and architecture knowledge across BI, analytics, and data platforms. As an independent analyst firm, we do not assess your requirements from the perspective of a single software or technology vendor.

Based on experience from more than 1,000 software selection projects, we connect business requirements, technical conditions, and the relevant software market. This enables finance and IT to decide together on architecture, software, and platforms.

Clarify the architecture first, then choose software and platform

Are you preparing a CPM software selection, reorganizing your system landscape, or clarifying the role of a data platform? In a first conversation, we identify the architecture questions that matter most. We then define the right scope for your workshop.
