Provider and product description
Exasol is a technology provider headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany. Founded in 2000, the company operates mainly in Europe and the United States with the majority of customers coming from German-speaking countries. Sustainably accelerating growth in the United States plays an important role in Exa-sol’s ambitions. Global companies including T-Mobile, Dell and Verizon rely on Exasol’s software to tackle the challenges of slow query times, fast data growth and the rising operational costs of data envi-ronments. Organizations of various sizes and industries use Exasol, which has a broad network of 100+ implementation and technology partners. The vendor works with BI implementation partners, systems integrators, resellers and OEMs. Exasol works closely with its community, which develops the integration capabilities of the database based on a free open-source version of the Exasol database on GitHub.
Exasol Espresso is a database designed for high-performance analytics (reporting, advanced analytics and ML, real-time KPIs and dashboards). It can be deployed as a BI acceleration layer, data warehouse or as a data mart. From a technical perspective, it is a relational, column-based, massively parallel-processing (MPP) enabled, in-memory database. It can be deployed as an analytical database in the customer’s cloud account, as a SaaS offering on premises, or on the public cloud (AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform).
Exasol sees itself as the highest-performing database for analytical workloads and proves this with TPC-H benchmarks. It offers 3 optimization levels and can be used as an accelerator for BI or analytics, as a logical data platform with a central access layer and as a modernized enterprise data warehouse. In ad-dition, it provides built-in machine learning capabilities where models run directly in the database in any language, thus enabling BI users to access deeper insights through Exasol’s data science integration.
The database itself is characterized by its strong query performance, self-optimization algorithms and a plug-in concept that simplifies the integration and functional expansion of the database. Exasol focuses on productivity, cost savings and flexibility and provides simple licensing and engagement models.

- Exasol customers are primarily using the platform for data warehouse and BI, data integration and self-service analytic uses.
- ‘Product functionality and performance’ is the top reason customers are buying Exasol. This trend is 30 percent higher with Exasol clients than the survey average.
Challenges
- Exasol ranks low in the Cloud Data Platforms peer group for Competitiveness. This was amplified by low scores for the Considered for Purchase and Competitive Win Rate KPIs. This appears to be a symptom of Exasol’s minimal global footprint and limited marketing.
- Exasol clients expressed concerns about pricing models and increasing costs of the software at a greater rate than the average responding to this survey.
- Customers expressed concerns over Project Length at a higher rate than the other Cloud Data Plat-forms in this survey.

What do you like best?
Technisch: Wir müssen kein großes technisches Know-how haben, wir können uns darauf fokussieren, Datenmodell gemäß fachlichen Anforderungen zu erstellen. Vorher hatten wir Teradata, da mussten man sehr viel technisches Know-how haben (Datenverteilung, Indexes, Statistiken, Compression,.....). In Exasol wird dies alles von selbst erledigt. Fachlich: Kein Salesmarketing, keine leeren Versprechen. Sie wissen, was sie gut können und was nicht. Ehrliche, bodenständige und offene Kommunikation. Versuchen für uns die beste Lösung zu finden.
What do you like least/what could be improved?
In letzter Zeit ist auch Exasol eher fokussiert auf Gewinn. Früher hatten sie eine fantastische User-Community/Forum (betreut durch Exasol-Mitarbeiter) mit fast wöchentlich neuen Events. Dies ist leider in den letzten 1.5 Jahren stark abgebaut worden.
What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?
Unbedingt einen POC machen, hierzu hat EXASOL einen Cluster auf Rädern, den man Wochenweise kriegen kann.
How would you sum up your experience?
Sehr erfolgreich. Wir können uns jetzt auf fachliche Fragestellungen fokussieren und müssen uns nicht um technische Details kümmern.

Möglichkeit, einfach und schnell neue Systeme zu installieren.
What do you like least/what could be improved?
Stabilität der Systeme. Support arbeitet im Vergleich zu früher / on-premise eher langsam und kann Cloud-spezifische Probleme spät bis gar nicht lösen.
What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?
Genau schauen, ob nicht die Exasol SaaS-Lösung oder on-premise besser passen.
How would you sum up your experience?
Gutes Potential, aber eingeschränkt durch mangelnde Features und schlechten Support.

Exacloud ist eher ein Nischenprodukt. Wenn z.B. Daten aus regulatorischen oder sonstigen firmeninternen Gründen nicht in Public Clouds (AWS, GC, Azure) gespeichert werden dürfen, kann Exacloud eine sehr gute Wahl sein. Die Datenbank ist sehr wartungsarm.
How would you sum up your experience?
Exasol ist eine sehr schnelle Analytics Datenbank. Durch die geringe Verbreitung ist die Unterstützung durch Drittanbieter nicht besonders groß. Der Ansatz Cold Data in billigeren Speicher auszulagern, aber in der Datenbank erreichbar zu machen, ist seit Jahren im Ansatz stecken geblieben.
