Idera Wherescape BARC Review & Rating

Provider and product description

Wherescape launched in 1999 with the simple and appealing proposition that data warehousing should be an automated process. CEO and co-founder Michael Whitehead built his New Zealand-based venture into a global operation, with Fortune 500 customers in the US and Europe as well as Asia. Fifteen years later, he handed the CEO reins to Mark Budzinski, who had increased US revenue to half the company’s business as global head of sales. In 2019 Budzinski folded Wherescape into Idera, whose many B2B software acquisitions include the data vendor Qubole and analytics vendor Yellowfin.

Wherescape has three primary offerings. To start, Wherescape RED helps ingest and transform data, then build, deploy and manage data warehouse environments. Wherescape 3D, meanwhile, provides a graphical interface for users to design and implement data models. Finally, Wherescape DVE automates the creation and management of hubs, links, satellites and other elements of data vault environments.

Wherescape integrates with the cloud platforms Snowflake, Databricks, Azure Synapse, AWS Redshift and Google BigQuery, as well as heritage systems such as Teradata, Oracle and SAP. It offers its products via direct sales and channel or OEM partnerships.

What do you like best?

What do you like least/what could be improved?

-

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

WhereScape ersetzt nicht das Vorhandensein von entsprechendem DWH- bzw. Modellierungswissen, um ein DWH sauber aufzubauen.

How would you sum up your experience?

What do you like best?

Automation of tasks. Consistency of generated code. Including automated generation of lineage and documentation. Maintainability of the 'code' base. Metadata as the start of everything. Good in metadata management and integration. Openness of repository data model. Plain SQL output. Possibility of migration to new targets. Integrated view of Warehouse development. Support for short cyclical work (Agile BI). Productivity gains. Database integrations /connectors. Extendability, easy to extend the product with your own written connectors, in almost any language. Wide and versatile out-of-the-box support for multiple data formats, also extensible. Version management (I like that it's there; I also think it can be simplified). Support is very good.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

Interface is a fat client with a large dependency on Windows. Deployment automation is very very good, but requires manual interaction. devOps deployment support is getting better in small steps only. Still needs considerable effort. Lineage stops at the warehouse, which also has to do with the limitations of opening up information due to license model. Support is very good, development tickets are open very long

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

It's expensive, but worth the money. It's also useful for smaller companies. Come and have a look.

How would you sum up your experience?

Very good

What do you like best?

Use it in scheduling of our jobs. It works well for that.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

Our predecessors had set it up on a virtual machine with limited capacity. I am guessing they were trying to save money on the license, but the end result, it that Wherescape is a bottleneck for our throughput.

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

Look at Fivetran and DBT as well as Wherescape.

How would you sum up your experience?

The datavault 2.0 methodology is really great for a large enterprise. Probably overkill for a small credit union. We don't need 9 layers of data mapping. We don't have a team of 25 data engineers, etc.

What do you like best?

The data modeling and ETL process is so easy, even a user can build the ETL process with the application.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

Need more in detail information on the errors and warning in the job report status.

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

I would recommend to use the application as it compatible with other applications and also performance wise it's way faster than regular SQL Server applications. Best part the person using the application doesn't need to know in depth knowledge on ETL applications and building Data Model and doing date profiling is very easy if you know your organization and data.

How would you sum up your experience?

Best application I ever encountered for ETL and data modeling.

What do you like best?

Automation of the ETL process.

What do you like least/what could be improved?

Part of software functionalities not meet our requirements (version control and scheduler).

What key advice would you give to other companies looking to introduce/use the product?

Start-of with a Proof of Concept with your source in your environment.

How would you sum up your experience?

Good.
