The ability to catalogue and define fields and columns for data sets. Governance tools to suggest changes to definitions.

I would suggest the ability to assign tasks to other stewards. Like being able to tag a table to a specific steward so they would know to go curate it.

It is a very useful tool that provides many different uses. I would say to prioritize the tools and uses that make sense for you business.

Overall, it is a very impressive tool. I think its application as a data catalog is the best we have come across. I think some of the other functions that it provides, such as querying from the catalog and the metadata tracking, are nice tools, but they don't necessarily meet our business needs beyond the catalog.

It is easy to use for all user types. There is a huge amount of knowledge shared within the community of its users (including users outside of our own company), which makes it easy to find answers, from simple to complex questions. It also helps with sharing adoption ideas and curation processes.

The Alation Data Catalog is very user-friendly and can be introduced to new users with very little effort. The Alation team has provided support throughout the implementation and adoption journey and are always very keen on helping. A vast amount of information is available on how to use the catalog and it also has a great community of users who are very active in sharing there ideas, questions, etc.

The Alation Data Catalog is easy to use and easy to administrate. I can see a lot of continuous effort put in by Alation to develop it and make it even better.

My company switched from Collibra to Alation. Our first step in this journey was performing a POV comparison. We objectively compared key components of both catalogs (search, connectors, performance, UX) and decided Alation aligned better with our strategy. Since we've migrated, teams have continually complimented the change. (Metadata engineers, data stewards, data engineers, business users, analytics, and governance professionals).

Thema nicht unterschätzen, Expertise drumherum aufbauen, Marketing für die Nutzung machen, Contentprozess und zugehörge Verantwortlichkeiten frühzeitig festlegen.

Schließt eine wichtige Lücke und ist deutlich besser als alles, was wir bisher in dem Kontext gehabt haben. Insbesondere bei komplexen Warehouse- und Lake-Landschaften eine große Hilfe im Anforderungs-, Nutzungs- und Entwicklungsprozess.

Nutzen Sie das Right-Start-Programm. Hier findet eine kompetente Begleitung statt und es wird ein sicherer Start mit dem Tool ermöglicht. Nutzen Sie die Community-Plattform zum Austausch mit anderen Anwendern.

Sehr komplexes aber größtenteils intuitiv zu handhabendes Tool. Exzellentes, kostenloses Schulungsprogramm (online-Kurse, eine vom Hersteller unterstützte Anwenderschulung). Ein Blick in die unterstützten, inkludierten und ggfs. extern einzukaufenden Konnektoren zu Datenbanken lohnt sich im Vorfeld.

The pricing model almost guarantees that we will not have enterprise-wide adoption. Getting all of our users to even a read-only user is going to be prohibitively expensive.

User Interface, ease of use. Will support business and technical enablement in the Data Governance Space. Alation Data Catalog is involved in the journey. Biweekly we discuss Best Practices and get questions answered. We discuss opportunities. These are face-to-face meetings. Knowledge is shared. Therefore, you do not need to reinvent the wheel . An active community platform where you can post questions and will get a response from an Alation Data Catalog expert.

It would be nice to see graph database technologies being used in Alation Data Catalog. Such as TigerGraph or Neo4j. (There are more graph technologies out there that I feel Alation Data Catalog needs to include in their product). This points to Knowledge Graphs.

The ease of use by business (non-technical) users is outstanding. Literally, anyone can be up and running with the tool in minutes. The second best thing is to be able to link those business definitions/use cases/process flows with the technical metadata (and shared queries, joins, filters, data preview) - all in a shared space, where everyone can learn from each other is a huge help to simplifying our data landscape. Flexibility of the tool itself - customize the landing page, the filter definitions for data domains - the look and feel - are excellent.

Our cybersecurity folks have forbidden us from using some of the cloud-based connectors because Alation uses a different keystore than other customers. This has caused some of our internal customers to be upset with the governance team (which is understandable). When we asked Alation to prioritize our standard keystore, the response was underwhelming. Alation changed their customer support model - removing our direct contact and their manager in favor of a more generic approach. The result is that requests like ours are now falling through the cracks. Alation is delivering on our request, but it's taken much longer than expected.

Staff the tool appropriately - people to set the standards/ create the domains, establish the connectors, enable the stewards. Establish a roadmap and training materials for both the business and technical users of the tool, so that they are able to be productive without wasting time fishing and experimenting. Create a data governance community of practice/ center of excellence to share stories (both successes and failures) across the enterprise, so that everyone can benefit from the tool and from data management improvements.

It is the best in its class. Not perfect, and the change in their customer support model is concerning - but overall, it is very beneficial to the organization and a good value for the money.

Slow to respond to, needs a secure connector to another source. What was promised in 12 months is going on 15 months. Not all the delay is on due to Alation, as the vendor they are connecting to has been slow to respond.
